HOW TO CONSTRUCT YOUR OWN EVOCATION OF THE LYRE OF THE ANCIENT HEBREWS!

lyre 1_resized

Here are the dimensions of my first lyre, which can be used by anyone wishing to also attempt to build their own instrument:

Length - 61cm (Bottom to top of bar in which tuning pegs are set)
Depth of the sound box - 5cm
Width at narrowest point - 8cm
Width at widest point - 33 cm (middle of lyre)
Length of Bar where tuning pegs are set - 8cm
Length of Bridge over which strings are stretched - 6.5cm
Height of bridge - 1.5cm

Bridge is tilted at the following angle, so that the highest string is

short, and the lowest string is long (giving a more equal string tension
on all the 10 strings):

Length between bridge and tuning peg for lowest string:51cm
Length between bridge and tuning peg for highest string:41cm

For any would-be "ancient lyre luthiers" out there, wishing to build your own lyre of the ancient Hebrews from these measurements & dimensions, you may wish to get in touch with Mitch Vire, who runs the "YoppyKyabetsu" Youtube Channel - a few years ago, he built a Kinnor based on the dimensions I gave him! Here is a video he posed of the result of his amazing work:

The strings are regular nylon harp strings - a set can be bought either from Mid East Ethnic Instruments, or any set of Celtic Harp Strings. Mitch managed with nylon fishing line for his lyre!

Dear Mr. Levy, I have a request for info. for which I'd like to pay with an item or two since I'm hurting for cash. I've been specializing lately in making bridges for stringed instruments and I'd love to reproduce a couple for you in alternate woods for fun or backup, no matter what make or model. It's amazing what a difference it can make in tone and volume. Your and my Mid East kinnor not only has that thick, plywood soundboard but I've proven that dense, massive bridge with its metal top was designed more by a visual artist luthier than an acoustical tech one studying how sound travels from one solid to another. A less massive one without brass improves some volume overall but especially the lower tones I had to electrically amplify to hear well at all (I installed an English double piezo internally). My request is simply to get the measurements for bridge placement plus overall string length of your other Davidic harp you used so much before the Greek repros. The maker's name escapes me at the moment but you know the one I mean. I want to reproduce that one, even if without the curves (they sell a more rectangular economy model I think they even call a Kinnor, but you have to have the link as it's hard to find through their site; they make few). I cannot afford to buy one (I LOVE the volume and tone) but I have plenty of aged woods and a lay luthier shop now selling the odd bridge, nut, and accessory for banjo, mandolin, and I'll be offering upgrade Kinnor bridges. I could also do you a piece of leather work if you like. Thanks; and thanks for posting the kinnor bridge placement -- the manual doesn't say! Jeff Burris, Florida US

Hi. My name is Flo Conner. I am a musician that plays the autoharp and the harp. I retired a few months ago and now I want to make my own harp / lyre. I got hardwood cherry wood for the lyre. And I think I'm gonna use steel auto harp strings on it instead of the nylon harp strings. I need to get a bridge to fit 10 strings on it. Where could I get a bridge about 5-6 inches long for steel strings?

This gives you the dmentions etc, but step by step instructions would be much appreciated on how to construct it. Where can you get this from? Thanks!
